Looking for a fun, easy, and Instagram-worthy coffee treat? This Dalgona coffee recipe, also known as whipped coffee, became a viral TikTok sensation for a reason! With just simple ingredients—instant coffee, hot water, and sugar—you can create a delicious treat that looks like an upside-down cappuccino and tastes like a creamy frappe coffee.

What is Dalgona Coffee?
Dalgona coffee originated in South Korea and quickly spread across social media during the early days of social distancing. Basically, it’s made by whipping equal parts of instant coffee, hot water, and sugar until it forms stiff, frothy peaks. This fluffy coffee foam is then spooned over cold milk, iced milk, or even hot milk, making it the perfect combination of flavor and texture.

Ingredients for Whipped Coffee (Serves 2)
- 2 tablespoons of instant coffee (or instant espresso powder)
- 2 tablespoons of sugar (you can use white sugar, coconut sugar, raw sugar, cane sugar, or monk fruit sweetener for a Keto whipped coffee)
- 2 tablespoons of hot water
- 1 cup of cold milk (whole milk, almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or oat milk all work well)
- Ice cubes (optional)
How to Make Whipped Coffee at Home Fast
Step 1: Combine the Coffee Base
In a small bowl, mix the instant coffee (we use Folgers Instant Coffee or Nescafe Instant Espresso Powder), hot hot water, and sugar (you can use sugar substitutes) . Use equal parts for best results. Two tablespoons of each makes enough topping for 2 servings. Simply double each ingredient to make more. We use an electric glass kettle like this one to make hot water FAST! If you’re using a coffee powder alternative or decaf coffee, make sure it’s an instant version—regular ground coffee or fresh coffee beans won’t work unless finely powdered.
Step 2: Whip It Good
I recommend using a handheld mixer like this one to whip the three ingredients together on high speed. It should start to thicken within just 1 minute, but you can go a little longer, for about 3-4 minutes, until stiff peaks form to get a thicker topping. You can use an electric mixer, stand mixer, or electric hand mixer. You can also use regular brewed coffee instead of instant coffee, but it may take longer to whip, around 5-8 minutes, just make sure you used finely ground coffee (because it’s the concentrated flavor that makes the whipped coffee taste so great).
Want to make whipped coffee fast? Use a rechargeable milk frother, electric whisk, or hand frother to whip enough air into the mix quickly.
You can also use a hand whisk or immersion blender with a whisk attachment, but be warned: it’s an arm workout and could take a long time (think 15–20 minutes!).
Step 3: Serve Over Milk
Pour iced milk, cold brew, or warm milk into a glass (or these cute mason jar with handles for extra flair), add some ice cubes if you like it chilled, then top with your whipped coffee mixture. Swirl and enjoy this creamy coffee drink! Once you whip up your creamy coffee topping, you can simply spoon it over a glass of icy milk. Swirl all the deliciousness together and you end up with something along the lines of a homemade coffee latte.
Experiment with different types of milk if you need to make this a dairy-free coffee recipe. We love using our homemade cashew milk, oat milk, or almond milk. We’ve even used vanilla-flavored cashew milk, and the whipped coffee turns out amazing!

Can I make Whipped Coffee without Instant Coffee?
A lot of people have tried using coffee powder made from finely ground coffee beans, but it’s hit-or-miss. Without instant granules, it’s hard to trap enough air to create that fluffy consistency. We tested reducing regular brewed coffee, but it didn’t work well either. For the best results, stick with instant or instant espresso powder.
Is This the Same as Beaten Coffee?
Yes! In India, a similar version called “beaten coffee” has been around for a long time, where the coffee and sugar are beaten into a paste before adding milk. Whipped coffee is a global cousin that’s become a viral favorite thanks to TikTok – make videos and social buzz.
Is there a Keto Whipped Coffee Variation?
For a Keto version of Whipped Coffee, simply use a sugar substitute like granulated Erythritol, Swerve confectioners, or Monk Fruit sweetener. You’ll still get stiff peaks and can enjoy it guilt-free.

Is there a Vegan or Dairy-Free Whipped Coffee Recipe?
Yup! To make the vegan whipped coffee, simply use non-dairy milk such as our favorite homemade cashew milk, or any other plant-based milk such as, coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk, or soy milk.
We love using the vanilla-flavored cashew milk to make our Dalgano Whipped Coffee because it makes it super creamy!
Can I Use Egg Whites?
Nope! While the texture might look like egg whites whipped into soft or stiff peaks, there are no eggs in whipped coffee—just coffee, sugar, and hot water.
