Don’t Panic 😉 I have your Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Chocolate Cupcakes right here! I get excited with anything Sci-fi and especially when it lends well to make nerdy cupcakes like these! My husband had a friend from work turning 42 and he LOVES Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, so what better way to celebrate than with some delicious chocolate cupcakes!

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Cupcake toppers by Sweetie Pie and Cupcakes

Okay, I’ll admit… I spent a little time creating the cupcake toppers for these themed cupcakes, but I thought, what the heck… AND I took the opportunity to make a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Printable so YOU could also print these out quickly and use them if the need arises. You never know when someone you love needs a nerdy Sci-fi party to make life that much better to live. So yes, the printable is right here!

When I make themed cupcakes, I like to decorate the cupcakes with three designs. So for these, I went with the little recognizable green dude, the number 42 (which those of you who have read the book or seen the movie would understand), and a universe swirl. From there, it’s pretty easy to cut out the printables, tape a toothpick to the back and stick them into the cupcakes.

I used one of my favorite chocolate cupcake recipes for these treats. The batter comes together pretty easily and it can be made with fairly standard ingredients. My favorite flavors in these chocolate cupcakes are the dark chocolate cocoa and a cup of coffee. These cupcakes come out so super moist and cakey, you will enjoy every bite!

How to Frost the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Cupcakes

The frosting is a super simple buttercream which compliments the chocolate cupcake perfectly. It’s light and airy and holds up very well, so you can make designs with it and the colors won’t run together. As you can see, I dyed some of the frosting bright green, some red, some black and then for the universe cupcakes, I went with dark blue, dark purple and a little hot pink. I used a star tip (Wilton #1M) for the universe swirls, and to get the swirl of color, simply load your decorating bag with a spoon of blue, then purple, then hot pink. Then repeat loading each color. When you pipe the frosting onto the cake, you can gauge if you need to stop and go to another cake if the right color isn’t coming out.

For the little green dudes, I just piped a green circle (using the tip with the large hole, Wilton #12), then the arms. Then I piped the black on for the mouth (Wilton #3 tip). Next I piped white for the teeth (Wilton #1). Then I added the red for the tongue (Wilton #3). Finally, I took the black with a tiny tip (Wilton #1) and lined the fingers.

For the number 42 cakes, I just piped green for the 42 (using Wilton #3 tip) and then used white to create the mice (Wilton #12 for the body and #1 for the tails). I used the black frosting with the tiny tip (Wilton #1) to pipe the eyes onto the mice.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Desserts

Whether you are doing a fun party at home or at work, these treats are sure to please the crowd. The little quotes and sayings make for a great conversation piece as the guests pick out their favorite cupcake. And if someone has never read the book, then maybe this will inspire them 😉

Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 cup Hershey’s or Trader Joe’s Cocoa Unsweetened cocoa
  • 1/4 cup Dark Chocolate Hershey’s Cocoa (Or just add another 1/4 cup of the unsweetened)
  • 1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp Baking Soda
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 Eggs
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Hot Coffee (allow to cool just a bit)
  • 1 cup Butter (FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING)
  • 4-5 cups Powdered Sugar (FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING)
  • 1 Tbsp Milk (FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla (FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING)
  • Coloring Dye (FOR THE BUTTERCREAM FROSTING)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two cupcake pans with cupcakes liners and spray with non-stick spray.
  2. Combine dry ingredients in a bowl. Stir slowly to combine dry ingredients.
  3. Add 2 eggs, 1 cup milk, 1/2 cup vegetable oil and 2 tsp of vanilla and mix well, scraping the sides of the bowl down as needed.
  4. Turn mixer to lowest speed and slowly add the 1 cup of coffee (be careful not to splash). Once combined, use just under 1/4 cup measuring cup and add batter into each cupcake liner (fill 3/4 full, not to the top!)
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, checking with a toothpick or sharp knife (if it comes out clean, then the cupcakes are done). Remove from oven and let cool before frosting.
  6. To make the buttercream, beat the cup of butter for 2 minutes until softened and lighter. Slowly add the 4 cups powdered sugar, 1 tsp vanilla and tablespoon of milk. Add more powdered sugar to reach desired consistency. Color the icing as needed. Load piping bags with frosting and pipe onto the cupcakes!
