Pear Crisp with Oats Recipe

Nothing says Fall like a yummy pear crisp made with fresh pears, rolled oats and brown sugar! This is a quick and easy pear recipe that makes a great breakfast treat or dessert!

Cutting pears to make pear crisp

We recently signed up for Farm Fresh to You! It’s a cooperative of farmers here in Southern California and they deliver fresh fruits and veggies to your door! I’m so excited to get fresh organic food and try new things. I’m not a big pear eater, but decided to add them to the list this week. I thought it would be fun to make a breakfast treat with the pears over the weekend. I ended up making individual pear crisps in little soup style bowls and baked them in the toaster oven. This pear crisp recipe could be easily made for a family by just increasing the recipe and baking it in a large Pyrex rectangular dish.

This pear breakfast treat made the house smell like Fall! The rolled oats are covered in brown sugar, melted butter, cinnamon and nutmeg. There’s nothing like Fall spices baking in the oven to make your house smell delightful 🙂 I don’t see many dessert dishes with pears, so I thought this would be a great one to include!

This pear crisp recipe would make a great breakfast dish with eggs prepared your favorite way. Or, if you are wanting a yummy, relatively healthy Fall dessert, you may want to serve the pear crisp warm with some vanilla ice cream or whip cream! This recipe is very easy to make and can be made ahead of time and then baked when needed.

Here’s the recipe for the Pear Crisp:

Servings: 2 people
Course: Breakfast, Dessert, Party Food
Cuisine: American
Ingredients Method Notes

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp Salt
  • 5 Tbsp Butter Salted or Unsalted- we use salted
  • 2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 2 tsp Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp cornstarch
  • 2-3 ripe pears peeled, halved, cored, and cut into chunks

Method

  1. Place oven rack to middle position (if using small toaster oven to bake the pear crisp, you can cover with foil so top doesn't burn). Heat oven to 425 degrees F. Or set toaster oven to about 375.
  2. To make the topping, in a bowl stir together the oats, flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt. Drizzle the melted butter over the mixture and stir until combined. Feel free to add chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts as well.

  3. To make the filling, in a bowl mix together the sugar, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Add the chopped pears and stir with a spatula to coat. Transfer the pear mixture to small dishes (or if making a large dessert, add pears into a large Pyrex dish).

  4. Spread the topping over the pear mixture. Bake until the fruit is bubbling around the edges. The topping will turn a golden brown. Bake about 15 minutes, if the oats are already browned and crisp, you can either stir the mixture a bit or cover with foil and bake another 10-15 minutes. Check to make sure the top doesn't burn. When done, allow to cool a few minutes, then serve warm. Enjoy!
