If you are looking for a dessert recipe to wow everyone, bless them with this easy Bread Pudding. This recipe is handed down from my family in New Orleans and it is absolutely mouth watering. The french bread is baked with Bourbon infused raisins and cinnamon and then drizzled with a Bourbon, buttery sauce. Learn how to make this famous bread pudding recipe here.
Easy Bread Pudding
This easy bread pudding recipe is one of my favorites to make because it is so simple to put together. You can use leftover french bread or toasted sweet bread for the bread part. The rest of the recipe is made with ingredients you probably already have around the house.
I have two favorite ways of making easy bread pudding. One is to use dried or toasted Hawaiian rolls. And the other way is to use leftover french bread. The Hawaiian Rolls version produces a more sweet bread pudding while the french bread makes a more firm and toasted bread pudding. Either way, you are going to be in Heaven when you eat this dessert. AND who says it has to be just dessert. This is a great breakfast recipe as well!
Tips for making Easy Bread Pudding
- Soak raisins in Bourbon overnight. This plumps up the raisins ahead of time.
- Make sure the bread you use is either dry or firm. If you are using sweet bread, you may want to cut it into squares and place it on a baking sheet in the oven at 200 degrees F for 10 minutes. If you are using french bread, it may be firm enough already. You could let it sit out for a half day to dry it out.
- If you need a kid-friendly version, just substitute the Bourbon in the sauce with a tablespoon of vanilla and 2 tablespoons of cider or vinegar.
- Cut the bread into small squares and soak it in the milk (see full recipe below). Press down on the bread to soak up as much of the milk as possible.
- Make the egg mixture and pour it over the bread. Add the raisins and stir carefully.
- Melt butter and coat a dish with butter. Pour the bread mixture into the pan.
- While baking the bread, make the bourbon sauce. Serve the sauce on the side. Pour on the sauce to taste! Enjoy!
The Amazing Bourbon Sauce for Easy Bread Pudding
The Bourbon sauce for the easy bread pudding recipe is creamy, smooth and buttery. When making the sauce, make sure not to let it come to a boil or it could curdle.
This traditional New Orleans style bread pudding is simply amazing with the addition of the Bourbon sauce. Remember to add it as a side to pour on. If you add it and then serve, it could make the dish mushy.

- Soak Raisins in Bourbon for a few hours. You can even soak them overnight if you like.
- Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Chop dried bread into 1 inch squares. Place 3 cups milk in a bowl and add the bread cubes. Press on the bread to soak up most of the milk. Add more milk if needed. All pieces should be soaked.
- In another bowl, combine the 3 eggs, 2 cups sugar, 2 Tbsp Vanilla, 1/4 tsp All-Spice and 1/2 tsp Cinnamon. Whisk together all ingredients and then pour over the bread and milk mixture. Add the Bourbon soaked raisins and gently stir with wooden spoon.
- Melt 3 Tbsp butter and coat a 9 x 13 inch dish (pyrex works great). Coat the bottom and sides with butter. Then pour bread mixture into pan and spread evenly.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 40 to 60 minutes. The liquid should set and the tops and edges should brown. The bread should pull away from the edges when it's done. To brown the top even more, put under a broiler for a minute or two. Watch carefully.
- While baking the bread, make the Bourbon sauce. Melt 1/2 cup butter in a sauce pan. Whisk in 1 cup sugar and 1 egg. Cook over low heat until mixture thickens. Do not boil. If sauce curdles, it can be blended in a blender. Finally, whisk in desired amount of Bourbon 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup depending on your taste. Serve on the side to pour on top by your guests.
