In today’s fast-paced world, grocery shopping can be a significant budget buster. The impulse buys, the lack of organization, and the absence of a well-thought-out plan can lead to overspending and wasted food. But fear not! There’s a tried-and-true solution to slash your grocery bill in half: meal planning. In this article, we’ll dive into the world of meal planning and introduce you to the meal planner we created to help us create more healthy meals and save money at the same time. It has become a budgeting tool that we rely on to keep our food monthly expenses in check.

How meal planning helped us save money

We’ve all been there… you decide to go grocery shopping, and you end up going while hungry. And to make matters worse, you go to a store like Costo thinking you are going to save a ton of money.

Only, you end up walking out with an electric toothbrush, a bunch of snacks, and some wine, and you’ve forgotten to buy the essential things you went for, GROCERIES!

We found that all of this extra spending started adding up, and it forced us to sit down and start tracking our expenses. Doing this made us realize we were spending a lot of extra money on food and eating out. And much of the food we were buying was going to waste because we had no plan.

So we decided to create a meal planner which you can download for free here! And what a huge difference this made for us. We could plan meals around eating more vegetables and less meat. This helped us eat healthier and save tons of money on our grocery bills.

Meal Planning helped us stop eating out

One of the biggest expenses with food comes with eating out. Without a meal plan, we found ourselves buying lots of food, thinking we would come up with some random meals during the week. And then temptation set in as we became frustrated about what to make for meals, especially for dinner time. And the result was often $50 to $80 restaurant dinners a few times a week! This adds up fast!

When we started tracking our spending on food, we soon realized that it was a lack of preparation that was leading us down the wrong path. We needed a plan, and that’s when we started to think about what we actually wanted to include in our meals.

Creating a meal plan helped us decide what we were going to eat ahead of time, and it stopped us from indulging at restaurants so much. We also stopped wasting so much food that went bad because it never got eaten.

Why Does Meal Planning Matter?

Meal planning isn’t just about jotting down recipes; it’s a strategic approach to managing your health and your food expenses. Here’s why it matters:

1. Reduces Food Waste: When you plan your meals, you buy only what you need, reducing the likelihood of ingredients going bad before you use them.

2. Minimizes Impulse Purchases: With a well-structured grocery list, you’re less likely to grab those tempting items that weren’t on your radar.

3. Maximizes Ingredients: Meal planning encourages creativity in the kitchen by helping you use ingredients across multiple meals.

4. Supports Health Goals: By planning balanced meals, you’re more likely to make nutritious choices, which can lead to better long-term health and fewer costly medical bills.

5. Saves Time: Planning ahead means less time spent wandering the grocery store aisles and more time enjoying your meals.

Does Meal Planning really save money?

Yes! One of the greatest advantages of meal planning is it helps you stick with your spending budget for food. Because you are only buying the things on your meal plan, you stay away from overbuying foods that won’t ever get used. When you purchase excess foods, many times things spoil and go bad, and you end up tossing foods in the trash. Planning your meals for the week and buying accordingly can help you save hundreds of dollars or more a month. Check out the food spending tracker inside of our complete meal planner.

How can I spend only $300 a month on groceries?

Once you start meal planning, sticking to a spending budget becomes so much easier. You can definitely stick to only spending $300 a month on groceries with a meal plan. Here are some tips to reduce your food spending and stay within your budget.

  1. Reduce meat or cut it out entirely from your recipes- meat tends to be the most expensive part of the meal. If you still love meat, consider sharing a steak and increasing the amount of veggies.
  2. Challenge yourself to use up what you already have in the pantry. Use a pantry inventory guide to help you.
  3. Start comparing prices- keep your receipts and analyze how much you are spending. Some stores charge much higher prices for certain foods. We found Whole Foods to be much higher than say ALDI.
  4. Look for discounted foods- many stores discount meat when it is getting close to expiring. This is a great way to still get meat into your meal plan.
  5. Use an app like Ibotta to save money on groceries by getting cash back.
  6. Avoid bagged or overly processed premade meals- not only are these meals loaded with tons of salt, preservatives, and unhealthy additives, but they tend to cost way more than if you made the meal from scratch.
  7. Find cheaper recipes- if you meal plan, you’ll be able to research and find cheaper recipes. Many recipes call for expensive ingredients as well. For example, ground beef is very costly and it can be easily substituted for healthier and cheaper ingredients such as cuts of chicken or vegetables.
  8. Store leftovers and eat them- if you have a little bit of leftovers after a meal, store them in the fridge or freezer and use them at a later time. Leftovers come in handy when you are tired of cooking and need to make a simple meal quickly.
  9. Use the ChatGPT prompts in our complete meal planner to stick with a budget amount you choose
  10. Track your grocery spending- keep your receipts and look over how much you spent on food during the month. Tracking your spending can help reveal where you need to start cutting back.
